West Coast Bound: Day 5 ~ Mount Rushmore

When Dan and I drove east, we took the detour off of I-90 to drive into Keystone and see Mount Rushmore. As you may have read in a previous post, it was covered in fog and the mountain couldn’t be seen. We are so glad that we took the time to stop today with Evan. It is absolutely spectacular! It truly is one of the nations treasurers. The memorial is adorned with flags from each state with the dates carved into pillars of when they became part of the union. There was a wonderful gift shop, a huge amphitheater that sat below the mountain, it was incredibly clean and absolutely worth a visit if you are ever in South Dakota, especially in August. It was a crystal clear day! Puppies aren’t allowed so we took turns going through the memorial. No family picture but here are a few of the great shots that we captured.

We drove through South Dakota and into Wyoming. Dan got the sign!

After crossing the upper east corner of Wyoming, we drove into Montana. God’s country. The landscape here is breathtaking. We stayed the night in Three Forks. It’s one of the most significant points along the Lewis and Clark Trail and it’s where the Jefferson, Gallatin, and Madison rivers meet to start the Missouri River. We stayed the night at the historical Sacajawea Hotel. It was built in 1910 as a rest stop for passengers and train crews.

The hotel has a rich history and changed hands and structure often over the last hundred years. Below is the lobby.

When we arrived, they gave us cold towels and glasses of champagne to welcome us. We sat outside on their magnificent veranda and ate dinner as we watched locals come and go through their little town that was almost completely free of stop lights. I could have stayed another day here enjoying the old charm and comfy chairs.

The room key was a regular key that fit into a very narrow door at the end of a hallway that creaked. The room had modern comforts, deliciously scented products, mints on our pillows, lavender pillow spray, ear plugs, a sound machine and a menu to hang on your door at night for “breakfast in bed” the next morning. They had coffee bar set up on the second floor landing and a small spa on the third floor. We enjoyed playing marble bison tic-tac-toe with Ev in the lobby as we listened to karaoke night making its way up the stairs from their pub. It was absolutely charming and I loved it!

We all slept soundly in their comfy and plush beds with a working air conditioner! Ahh!
